WordPress themes, incredible work, amazing value
I wrote this post a while back. The content can still be relevant but the information I've linked to may not be available.
I’ve been doing more work with WordPress for another local web design company recently and, as a result, I’ve been browsing WordPress themes and marketplaces more often.
Anyway, one of the themes that I’ve seen is the Avada theme, from Theme Fusion, as sold on Theme Forest here [affiliate link]. I was amazed by the amount of layout and functionality options that the theme provides….. and it looks bloody good! No surprises that this is apparently the top selling theme on Theme Forest.
At this point, you might be saying “all WordPress themes/sites look the same these days” and I know what you mean. Put a slider on the home page, add three or four icon-with-text boxes below that, show some content about the company, add a fat footer with some widget areas and you’re done, right? That’s true but I’d say a lot of small businesses would be more than happy with that approach because they get a good looking website, that they can manage with a small amount of training, at a reasonable price point.
There’s more to the success of any website than that of course and if the objectives of the site aren’t matched with the WordPress theme or with the content on the site and … well, you get my point.
However, I have been thinking about my approach to small business websites as a result of Avada and other themes. Currently, I design and build websites using several different approaches depending on the budget and the client’s objectives. Perhaps a custom design. Sometimes a rebuild/modernisation of a current site. Sometimes, an ecommerce template as a starting point.
This means that I spend quite a bit of time on each project and I’m not sure if I could be more productive by doing things differently. Perhaps I should move over to WordPress theme customisations as my main approach? I could probably cover my client’s objectives and get more sites done. It’s definitely something I’m considering.
