I've started a new business. Changing things round here.
31 October 2016 by
I've started a new business which has meant a period of re-adjustment for me. It's all good but I'm having to balance my 'day job' (web developer) with my new business (running a coworking space in Horsham).

Choosing WordPress or Perch. Or Both?!
12 February 2015 by
I wrote this post before Christmas where I discussed some potential decisions about the focus of my business. In particular, whether I should focus on a single content management system, WordPress or Perch, for web development. Well, I've decided to continue to use both! Here's why.

Decisions, decisions...
12 December 2014 by
I’ve been doing a lot more thinking about my freelance business over the course of the year. As we approach 2015, it seems like a good time to make a decision…. or, at least, write a blog post!

Taking a few more steps with Sass and learning new things
23 September 2014 by
It’s taken me a while to get onboard with CSS pre-processors like LESS and Sass. I wrote about LESS or Sass or neither two years ago (!) and I’ve not, until recently, moved on from that position. Yet, I have been changing the way that I work and part of that is being better organised.

Why I haven't joined Adobe Creative Cloud
11 November 2013 by
Adobe have moved from a boxed product model for their Creative Suite software to a cloud-based service called Creative Cloud and, over the last few months or so, I’ve been thinking whether I should join. On the face of it, Creative Cloud looks pretty good. You get access to the full suite of Adobe products including, for example, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator and InDesign, which is a lot of software for the monthly price of £46.88 (in the UK). And you get software updates as soon as they are published. However, for my specific requirements, it doesn’t feel right for me. So, at the moment, I’ve decided not to join and here’s why.

Starting a coworking group
30 August 2012 by
This year, I’ve started a local co-working group in Horsham. It’s always a good idea to regularly review an initiative like this. How is it going? The pros and cons. How do I develop it further? I’ve been thinking about these recently so this post is a good opportunity to summarise and assess progress.
Firstly, a little back story…

From print to iPad, Worthing Digital meet-up
09 April 2012 by
At the end of last month, I went to the March meet-up of Worthing Digital where Harry Brignull from Clearleft described the development of an iPad app for The Week magazine. Taking a print magazine’s content and designing a tablet app in ten weeks was, I think, a tough challenge, so it was great to hear the project described in some detail.

How I learned to love invoicing
16 November 2011 by
A few months ago I read Grace Smith’s article 8 Services That Power My Business where the online invoicing application Curdbee was described. I took Curdbee for a test drive and I’ve been using it for the last few months. I don’t use every single feature but I think it’s a great invoicing or billing app for any freelancer or small business.
CurdBee is a simple web application that makes billing a breeze. Use it to send estimates and invoices, track time and expenses, and accept online payments. Say goodbye to paperwork!
Curdbee is an app that allows you to manage your invoices and clients via a web interface. It’s not a full-blown accounting app but it has made invoicing a much more enjoyable and quicker task for me. Here’s why I like it…
