Testing websites in different browsers
I wrote this post a while back. The content can still be relevant but the information I've linked to may not be available.
One of the problems that web designers/developers face is ensuring that websites look consistent over a range of browsers and operating systems. It is usually very time consuming to test a new website on more than a few browsers.
We like to focus on the most popular browsers, perhaps IE5, IE6 and Firefox (Mozilla), because our estimate is that these currently represent over 90% of web visitors. Opera may have its admirers but it’s a bit quirky and customers will often not be happy if we spend time optimising for a browser with 1% of the market. Sorry guys, but that’s the way it is…
Usually, we try and avoid browser hacks or methods that give inconsistent results…but occasionally we need to check a new website design on a different operating system or for a browser that we do not have. What to do? Ask a friend to view it on his Mac? That’s great for a one-off occasion but can be impractical if several viewings are required. That’s where BrowserCam is useful.
BrowserCam provides screenshots of your new website on many different browser/operating system combinations and is a great way of testing website consistency.
