Search engine friendly ecommerce templates
I wrote this post a while back. The content can still be relevant but the information I've linked to may not be available.
We often get asked about search engine optimisation for existing ecommerce websites. Unfortunately, there is often no easy answer to this because search-engine friendly features need to be built-in on each page (and into the database design). Sometimes this cannot be retrofitted into existing ecommerce website software.
In addition to the page content itself, each product page needs to have a descriptive title and specific meta tag keywords and description that are relevant to the product in question. It’s no good having the same page title for each dynamic page. Instead, each page needs to pull information from the database and create the page title, meta keywords and description on a product-by-product basis.
In addition, the navigation pages of the website need to accurately reflect the categories that they describe. So, pages that describe a particular shop category or section need to have relevant page titles and meta tags (also dynamically generated). Another advantage of the dynamic approach is that changing the category names or shop sections through a web-based control panel will also change the search engine properties of the specific page with the minimum of fuss.
That’s where the ecommerce templates that we provide are so good. Each template is designed to be edited in a common web editor and some relatively simple code adjustments are all that is needed to optimise each product and category page for search engines. It makes everybody’s life easier. Great!
