Perch Dashboard Links Widget
I wrote this post a while back. The content can still be relevant but the information I've linked to may not be available.
I've been working on a Perch Dashboard Links widget. I wrote a Google Analytics widget a while back but haven't followed that up. So, I thought it was time to relearn a few things about Perch widgets.
The Dashboard widget is pretty simple. It enables a Perch admin user (or someone with access to Perch CMS admin Settings page) to add up to three links which are displayed as a widget on the Perch dashboard. The user can change the widget heading as well. Exciting, I know ;-)
I'm a big fan of this type of "side project" even if it's a simple example (like this). I learned things from doing it. During the development, a few issues came up that I hadn't thought of at the start so they had to be fixed. And I realised that there are probably a few smarter ways of doing things if I take the widget further. All part of the learning process.
I encourage everyone to do something like this. And to write about it. Even if you side project is not a full-blown app/add-on or you don't get very far with it, I still think it's worth posting a few words about it.
